Nelson is built to help you learn, not to build an advertising profile about you. You can use the app without creating an account, and we collect only the information needed to operate and improve it.
Who this policy covers
This policy explains how Nelson, operated by Aditha Jayasuriya in Australia, handles information when you use the Nelson mobile app, visit fromnelson.com, or contact us.
Information we handle
Your reading life. Reading and listening progress, quiz results, Inkling progress, preferences, streaks, saved items, notification settings, and the display name you choose are stored on your device so the app can remember and personalise your experience. Your display name may appear in notifications generated locally on your device. So it can never be lost, this reading life is also backed up to Nelson’s servers — under your account if you sign in, or under an anonymous identifier created on your device if you don’t. We use the backup only to restore your library; it is never shared or sold, and it is not sent to PostHog.
Account information. An account is optional and there are no passwords. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive a stable identifier from that provider and, if you share it, your email address. We use these only to recognise you and let you recover your library on a new device.
Product analytics. We collect a random app installation identifier and events such as screens viewed, stories opened or completed, listening activity, quiz results, feature use, session duration, app version, platform, and basic device information. PostHog also derives approximate country, region, city, and time zone from the network connection. The identifier is not derived from your name, email address, advertising identifier, or device serial, but it lets us group activity from the same installation. We use this information to understand product use and improve Nelson.
Information you choose to send. If you submit feedback or contact us, we receive the message and any name or email address you choose to include.
Technical request information. When the app or website connects to our servers, our hosting providers may process information such as an IP address, request time, requested URL, and browser or device details to deliver the service, prevent abuse, and maintain security.
How we use information
- Provide stories, audio, quizzes, learning paths, and other app features.
- Remember progress and preferences on your device.
- Understand which parts of Nelson are useful and how the product performs.
- Investigate errors, protect the service, and prevent misuse.
- Respond when you contact us.
We do not sell or rent personal information. We do not use personal information for targeted advertising.
Service providers
We use a small number of providers to run Nelson. These currently include Railway for hosting, PostHog for product analytics, and Formspree when the in-app feedback form is enabled. Apple also processes information when you download Nelson through the App Store.
These providers process information under their own terms and privacy policies. They may process information in the United States and other countries where they operate. Privacy protections in those countries may differ from those in Australia. PostHog derives approximate country, region, city, and time zone from the IP address associated with an analytics event. This is approximate network location, not precise GPS location, and Nelson does not request access to device location services. We configure PostHog not to capture session replays or automatically capture screens, taps, errors, or app-lifecycle events.
Retention and security
Information stored locally remains on your device until you clear it or remove the app, although an operating-system backup may retain or restore a copy according to your device settings. We keep analytics, server records, and correspondence only for as long as reasonably needed for the purposes described above, including security, support, and legal obligations.
We use reasonable technical and organisational safeguards, but no internet service can guarantee absolute security.
Your choices and rights
You can delete your Nelson account and everything that goes with it — sign-in connections, reading history, backups, and analytics identity — from Settings → Account → Delete account in the app, or by following the steps at fromnelson.com/delete-account. Deleting the app alone removes locally stored information and stops future analytics, subject to any device backup you control. You may contact us to ask about personal information we hold, request access or correction, or raise a privacy concern.
We will review privacy requests and complaints, respond within a reasonable period, and explain any steps we take. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law.
Paid commissions
We store commission briefs, correspondence, credit preferences, order status and payment references to produce and deliver requests. Editors and content-production providers process briefs; please leave out sensitive personal information. Finished content joins the public catalogue. Requests remain private, and you can turn public credit off.
Apple processes iPhone payments. RevenueCat verifies purchases using the Nelson account identifier and store transaction information. Nelson does not receive payment-card details. Minimal transaction records may remain after account deletion for purchase integrity and financial records; account-linked private requests, messages and public credit are removed. Production working materials are retained for editorial maintenance.
Optional commission updates use Expo and Apple push notifications. If enabled, a notification token is linked to your active account session. Push messages contain no brief, correspondence or topic. Disable updates from a request or sign out to stop that session’s delivery. Reading reminders remain local to your device.
Children
Nelson is designed for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us so we can investigate and delete it where appropriate.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Nelson changes. The effective date at the top will show when the latest version took effect. Material changes will be communicated through the app or website when appropriate.
